weekend in photos // foxfield races

Everytime I have gone back to Charlottesville with David (he is a UVA alumni) each and everyone of his friends have said something along the lines of "are you coming to Foxfield this year?" Foxfield races are similar to the Kentucky Derby held just outside of Charlottesville that students and alumni from schools not only UVA come to but from Universities all around the area - from as far away as Georgetown to closer schools like JMU. It's very similar to the Kentucky Derby for many reasons but the most important reason has to be the dress - the 'uniform' is almost unanimously girls wearing Lilly Pulitzer dresses and derby hats while the men are in light colored shirts, bow ties and Sperrys.

So a few weeks ago, I found myself buying tickets, a dress and a hat and before I knew it, I was in Charlottesville ready for the race. David and I started off the weekend watching a concert and eating from a variety of delicious food carts in the Charlottesville Downtown Mall the night before. We woke up the next day at 7am, headed to the field, and spent our day on his fraternity's plot. We ate, drank, hung out with all of his UVA friends and, surprisingly, found some time to watch the races. We even won a few dollars in bidding. Somehow, we didn't even find time to take a single picture while there, but I grabbed a quick one in the car with my hat (and my new hair! I got it cut and dyed back to it's natural color last week)
The next day we spent a few minutes just north of Charlottesville wine and beer tasting. We spent absolutely too much going from place to place buying our favorites (we had done the same route last October and found some wines & beers that we just loved). But, while we were on our tour, someone suggested that we check out Bold Rock Cider because they had free tastings. Loving cider, I somehow convinced David to go (he wasn't too excited). While there, he not only fell in love with the taste, but we got a tour of the whole facility from the owners - and it was a beautiful property. It was interesting to hear how different the cider process is from beer and to see it getting bottled. The property also just put over $4 million into a beautiful new barn to hold their brewing and we took a tour and looked at what it is going to look like when it is revamped.

What did you do this past weekend?

  8. I picture Charlottesville as one of the picturesque southern towns. It's a place I would love to spend time in. I am a West coast girl, but would love to see the many historical parts of the South. The area looks old but new, if you know what I mean.
